Telecom Fiji has taken significant steps to support education in rural areas by donating computers and printers to schools in Korovisilou and Labasa. These contributions aim to bridge the digital divide and provide essential technological resources to students and educators in these communities.
In response to the recent flood that caused extensive damage to Ratu Latianara High School and Ratu Latianara Primary School in Korovisilou, Telecom has donated two computers and two printers. This gesture comes at a critical time, as these schools strive to recover from the disaster. The donation was made following a request from the Ministry of Education, which recognized the urgent need for technological resources to assist in the schools’ recovery efforts.
Charles Goundar, Chief Executive Officer of Telecom Fiji, stated, “At Telecom, we believe in the power of education and the role technology plays in enhancing learning environments. Our donation is a step towards ensuring that students and educators at Ratu Latianara schools have the resources they need to overcome these challenges and continue their educational journey without disruption.”
Additionally, Telecom has extended its support to Lagalaga Sanatan Primary School, a rural institution 55 kilometers from Labasa Town. The school, which primarily serves the children of local farmers, has faced significant challenges due to its remote location and limited financial resources. The donation of computers will provide students with essential access to technology, enabling them to develop critical digital skills.
Ajay Prasad, Head Teacher of Lagalaga Sanatan Primary School, expressed his gratitude: “The introduction of computers into our school will significantly enhance our students’ educational experience, allowing them to develop essential digital skills that are critical in today’s world. We believe that access to technology will open up new avenues of learning and help bridge the digital divide that currently exists between rural and urban students.”
Telecom’s commitment to supporting educational institutions, especially in times of crisis, underscores its broader mission to bridge the digital divide in rural areas. Korovisilou was the first rural community in Fiji to be connected to Telecom’s reliable and ultra-fast Fibre Internet service, benefiting essential services like the Korovisilou Health Centre and Ratu Latianara College.
Selina Kuruleca, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education, added, “We are incredibly grateful for Telecom Fiji’s generous support and their dedication to our schools’ recovery. These computers and printers will play a crucial role in the administration of the schools, ensuring smooth operations and effective management. This donation is a testament to the strength of community partnerships and the positive impact stakeholders can have when they come together.”
These donations exemplify Telecom Fiji’s dedication to enhancing educational resources in rural communities, ensuring that students and educators have the tools they need to succeed and thrive in the digital age.
